Does genre really matter? Absolutely when writing a book! Fiction... Non-Fiction... Biography... Technical... or another book book genre Whew! There really is a plethora of choices to make when writing a book.
The absolute first thing you must do to write a successful book is to pick the right book genre. This will determine more than just who you are writing for, but how you will present the material you have within the book itself. What is handled in a how-to format will be covered very differently compared to a finances book and you must realize that in order to give your specific reader market what they desire.
Fiction versus. Non-Fiction:
The first thing you must determine is whether you would like to write a fiction or non-fiction book. This should be a relatively straight-forward decision to make.
Fiction Choices
Fiction writers have a list of options about how they would like to tell their story. There is a basic novel and then there are subcategories like fantasy, romance, mystery, and more. Every story can be told in a variety of ways and the one you choose really will be determined by your own comfort level.
Non-Fiction Choices
For most of you, non-fiction is the format that will be chosen; mostly because your books will likely be more informational, offering advice, help and motivation on specific subjects. However, in exactly the same manner as fiction, the non-fiction genre contains many sub-types to choose from:
How-To Biography Essay Technical Historical Sports Health Self-Help Family Finances Business Career Cultures Educational Science
The sky really is the limit when choosing a non-fiction genre or category to write within. Okay, so how does a new writer figure out how to move forward and which genre to choose for the book? You have to firstly gloss over the types of books that you enjoying reading the most. Choosing a genre you are familiar with will help you to better understand how to write in that way.
Next, consider the material you have to work with. Maybe you are writing a book about buying your first home. The how-to format would work well, but the use of a more financial or educational angle would also work fine and suit the writing subject. Again, the choice is yours. It really depends on what you are comfortable with and how you want to proceed.
Still stuck? You must write a quick synopsis of your book using different genre angles. You may surprise yourself and find a format that looks better than you originally thought would be the case. Often, simply stepping outside of our comfort zones as writers results in the creation of our best work.
Ready to get to work? Let's Go! Start by picking a genre to help guide your writing process throughout the entire book. Not only will your genre choice help you better communicate with your reader, but it will help show you how to get all of the facts down in an interesting and cohesive manner.
You must remember, the right genre can turn a good book and turn it into a great one!
